Mediacs media literacy workshops are highly interactive, high-energy discussions specifically designed for elementary, middle and secondary school school students. These are turn-key, in-class sessions complete with follow-up exercises and a note that’s ready to go home to parents helping them understand the workshop content and their importance as media gatekeepers.

The sessions address many of the grade-level expectations of the Language based media literacy curriculum and depending on the workshop, overlap with health, drama, physical education and arts based curricula. The workshops include many hands-on activities that connect the curriculum to the real world. In fact, much of what is discussed goes beyond the curriculum expectations to explore media related social issues such as body image and self esteem.

The focus of the workshops is largely on marketing and advertising because of its overwhelming influence on children’s lives and because this is often where these social issues are played out.

You Got Schooled!

Is your school incorporating media literacy into language arts, health, social studies, science, math, geography, phys-ed, art, guidance, civics, business etc, etc, etc? Mediacs workshops turn students into passionate learners, gently and strategically cross-referencing many of these subject areas. The discussions generated in our workshops energize students and inspire them to learn. Many teachers comment Mediacs workshops and media studies turn disengaged, level 1 thinkers into level 4 performers.

Love it or hate it, our media culture is the source of enormous pleasure for many kids and applying critical thinking skills to it’s messages triggers levels of reasoning and reflection that embody the very goals of education.
